Information on How to Save Your Home’s Energy

Posted by: admin In: Home Improvement Information

Saving home energy is something you should do regardless of whether or not you are environmentally concerned as it allows you to save money. Even though most homes use the same types of energy for the same purposes, there are some among us that have found the secrets of using less energy, but achieving the same results, if not better.

One of the ways in which we use energy is to heat up our homes. The way to save energy here is to keep the temperature of your thermostat constant. Instead of increasing the temperature when you feel cold, try to take other actions, such as wearing a sweater or using an extra blanket, to make yourself feel warm. Doing this wastes none of your home heat and also saves you money.

Apart from this, your furnace is something you should check on an annual basis. This is important because your home can only be heated efficiently if your furnace is functioning correctly – a poorly maintained furnace will not do so. Making sure that your doors and windows are properly and securely sealed allows you to avoid the coming of cold air drafts into your home. You can locate a draft by simply placing your hand near an area that you suspect may have a small crack or hole. If you feel a draft, you will have located an area that needs fixing.

However, be sure to moisten your hands with water before you do this as it will allow you to feel with more sensitivity. Apart from windows, you should make sure that your electrical outlets, switch plates, baseboards, dampers, attic hatches, fireplace and air conditioners do not allow any drafts into your home. By taking simple steps, we can certainly reduce our energy bills, which is vital in our modern lifestyle, and taking such steps will also decrease the amount of energy your home uses.

Another way by which energy is used in very large amounts by most homes is electricity. Statistics show that, on average, 10% of your energy bill is due to your electrical energy usage, particularly for lighting your home. This can be reduced by using lower wattage bulbs, or bulbs with wattage appropriate for their designated area – low wattage for small rooms, higher wattage for large rooms etc. Avoid using a high watt bulb where you require only a low watt bulb.

However, there is an even better solution to reducing the energy consumed by your lighting, which is the use of energy-efficient light bulbs. These systems last up to 10 times longer than the average light bulb, produce brighter, white light (rather than the normal yellowish light given off by regular filament bulbs) and, most importantly, use much, much less energy.

You may see for yourself how much less energy they use by simply touching them when they are on – they are much cooler to the touch, which means they are using up less energy and giving off less of the heat we don’t even need. Energy efficient light bulbs can be used in confined spaces as they use very little amounts of energy, compared to even the low wattage filament bulbs.

Another great way of saving electricity is to change the ways in which you use your electrical appliances and devices. The easiest way to save energy with such things is to simply turn them off rather than having them on stand-by when they are not being used – leaving a device such as your Television or computer can consume up to 60% of the electricity that it needs when you are actually using it!

Some appliances, like most microwaves which display a digital clock on their front face, should not only be turned off, but also unplugged to ensure that they are using up no electricity. You should try avoiding the use of lights during the day time – open up your curtains, blinds and windows to allow natural sunlight to illuminate your room.

This article shows a tiny fraction of the solutions to home energy wastage that are out there, waiting to be implemented into your lives. Solutions to energy wastage can sometimes be simple, like ensuring that your refrigerator’s door(s) is closed, while they can also be slightly more complicated, like investing in electricity generating solar panels, or energy efficient heating systems.

It is the responsibility of all home owners to not only understand that they have this duty of saving home energy, but also fulfilling it to the best of their ability by making the adjustments to their lifestyles where it is possible. Doing so can make very positive and tangible changes in the world.
