WinSingad is software for use in singing lessons to provide visual feedback to support the teacher and student as they work on various aspects of singing. It runs on a PC under Windows and has been compared (favourably!) to the mirror as another tool available to the teacher which can be employed in support of the learning process as appropriate. A recent research project, known as VoxEd, between the University of York and the Institute of Education in London funded by the UK's Arts and Humanities Research Board, tracked the use of WinSingad with teachers and students in two singing studios, one in York and one in Guildford. Singing students and teachers involved in the project were unanimous in stating that when it was used, WinSingad enhanced their learning/teaching experience. The software was developed by Professor David M Howard. |

Winsingad exists in two versions. In its
full (non-freeware), research version, it is a real-time system that enables
a number of parameters to be displayed against time including: fundamental
frequency, spectrogram, waveform, spectral ratio, as well as minimum,
mean or maximum vocal tract area. It also has a spectrum display and a
vocal tract area display. The freeware version includes the following
features: waveform, fundamental frequency, spectrogram and spectral ratio.
Each parameter appears in its own panel, and the panels can be moved around
vertically and one can be enlarged to enable greater screen space to be
assigned to it (compare the two images below). The images below are for
a sung [i:] vowel on a rising pitch in an untrained (left) and trained
(right) style. |
